Traditional Clothing Style in Abyaneh(Viuna)

What is a genuine traditional clothing style for women and men in Abyaneh (Viuna)?The answer to the question can be found in a historical book entitled "Abyaneh and its people's culture" written for the first time by a very skilled writer in Iran.s history.

This is a historical bok published by "Ganjineh Honar. The publisher in the preface of this book comments that "The book is a historical written for the first time in Iran's history with the utmost courage and accuracy by Mr Z. Khansari Abyaneh.

The book describes the traditional Abyaneh's culture in a very striking way. It is based on a broad and thorough research. It is noticeable that the author is an experienced and knowledgeable about his own culture from what is described in the book." The author, with his congenital clear-sighted language in favourable interaction with a brave but grounded literary figure, has managed to capture a precious collection of the old traditional culture in a historical village. It is rare to read a book that contains so much facts and knowledge on the subject." The book no doubt provides a good foundation for future generations' research. Publisher

Our team has, on permission of the author has briefly translated part 2 of the book into English about the men and women's traditional clothing style in Abyaneh. We think we have a great responsibility to preserve the unique traditions at all possible levels and preserve it for generations to come.

Men's Clothing

Men's general clothing  from the Safavid period (17th century) to the early part of the present century included:

  • Skullcap - Hand woven cashmere, colourful hat
  • Felt hat - Brimmed, stetson hat
  • Trousers - Wide, slack of canvas or fustian
  • Shawl - Mantle, made of very fine wool
  • Cashmere cape
  • Geva - Hand woven cotton shoes
  • Chamoosh (Leather shoes)
  • Coat & Overcoat - Autumn and winter clothes
  • Qaba - Long colourful dress

Wealthy people used Qaba made of expensive woven fabric In a city in central Iran. Qaba is used only at wedding ceremonies. Otherwise the general clothing style applies to the men. Designing and sewing clothes by hand has always been carried out by skilled women. At present, the men's wide trousers are still living their own lives and has not yet changed over time.

Women's Clothing

Obviously, people's clothing has changed over the course of time in accordance with other patterns of life, and women's clothing, in this village has not gone out of style, and in every little step the shape and color have changed, but not in the way that the original. However, this outfit retains its old roots. Women's clothing in Abyaneh (Viuna) includes:

  • Charghad (Scarf)- The scarf is floral with cheerful and beautiful colors with a diameter of 1,5 m which is triangular in shape on the head and is pinned under the chin and covers the head, neck and breasts well.
  • Piroon (Dress)- A professional made dress, loose fitting with collar, V-shaped cut on the sides. Partially dark in color. The dress is embroidered at the front and back with beautiful patterns with thread colors along the lower part of the dress.
  • Tamoona (Skirt)- The skirt in local language is also called "shalite" (sort of pleats and hoop skirt) tied with a waistband which covers the waist to the knee. Ca 10 meters of the garment (cotton or satin) is used for a shalite. Decorated with sparkling strips, of silver or gold threads sewn ten centimeter above the bottom edge of the skirt.
  • Curti - The women also take on Curti depending on the weather conditions. Dress is a type of thick velvet garment (red), with a wide glittering ribbon sewn around the edges.
  • Chashaáv- A colourful garment with geometric patterns in a triangle form widely worn by girls and women as autumn and winter clothing. It resemblance to Poncho/Ruana traditional Mexican clothing. Chashaa'v is a part of the Abyaneh's (Viuna's) women traditional costume.
  • Geva (Shoes)- Hand woven cotton shoes.
  • Chamoosha (winter boots) - Is another part of women's clothing.
  • Jewellery- The ring, the bracelet, the necklace, and the tie,, which is used at ceremonial weddings. The crown is worn on the head.
